VTA SmartPass
Where would you go if you could ride for free?
Enjoy unlimited travel on VTA buses and light rail with your VTA SmartPass loaded on your Clipper Card. Use it for your commute to work, and ride as often as you’d like. Spend a day in downtown San Jose, go to a Shark’s game, or even get to the San Jose Airport!
The VTA SmartPass, loaded on your Clipper card, allows unlimited travel on VTA buses including express buses) and VTA Light Rail.
Eligible - The SmartPass is free for university, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and hospital employees who meet all of the following conditions below:
- Work 20 or more hours per week
- Receive regular Hospital benefits
- Are at Stanford primarily for employment
- Residence address is not on Stanford property (outside of the 94304, 94305, and 94309 ZIP codes*)
- Residence address is within a typical commuting range of Stanford's main campus (i.e., Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, and Yolo counties)
- Are not in a classification listed under "Not eligible"
- For Stanford Health Care employees: are not fully remote, and assigned work location is in one of the following zip codes within the Caltrain Service Area: 94304, 94087, 94305, 94025, 95110, 94303, 95054, 94028, 94027, 95134, 94063, 94070.
Not Eligible - University, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and hospital employees are NOT eligible if they meet any of the following conditions below:
- Temporary and casual employees and contractors
- Employees working less than 20 hours per week
- Anyone whose residence address in the HR database has a 94304, 94305, 94309 ZIP code*
- Anyone whose residence address in the HR database has a blank ZIP code*
- Employees whose residence ZIP code and/or worksite is/are not within the typical commuting range of Stanford's main campus (e.g., outside of California, Southern California, etc.)
* Proof of residence off Stanford property will not be accepted for ineligible (94304, 94305, 94309) or blank ZIP codes in the Stanford Transportation database and no exceptions can be made.
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 2023
If you are eligible and have not yet received your VTA SmartPass Clipper Card, you can submit a request a online. The SmartPass is free for university, SLAC and hospital employees working 20 or more hours per week, are at Stanford primarily for employment, reside off Stanford property, are within typical commuting distances, and are not in a classification listed under “Not eligible”. Stanford Health Care employees are only eligible for a VTA Smart Pass if they are not fully remote and their assigned work location is in one of the following zip codes within the Caltrain Service Area: 94304, 94087, 94305, 94025, 95110, 94303, 85054, 94028, 94027, 95134, 94063, 94070.

* Please note: due to the Stanford University winter closure, No new transit pass requests will be processed between 12/12/2023 - 12/31/2023. Effective January 1, 2024, management and assignment of hospital staff transit passes will be overseen by Stanford Medicine Transportation Services (previously Stanford University).
The VTA SmartPass is valid for the full calendar year, seven days a week, with no restriction on use. Use VTA on your commute or to travel all around Santa Clara County on your days off.
